Saving Water and Money This Summer in Oakland and Berkeley

Water, save it for what you love!
I love the East Bay Mud advertising campaign from a few years back. It was simple and direct, featuring a cool, blue swimming pool, reading, “Water, save it for what you love.”

My son had his first swim meet of the season today and he and I agree that what we love is a crystal, clear pool!

Some creative ways that I’ve found to save water…

1. When working in the kitchen, I partially fill a basin with lukewarm soapy water. When I need to wash my hands, I just swish and dry.

2. Always collect running water into a pitcher as you let it heat up for washing pans.

3. Keep a bucket nearby to pour unfinished glasses of water and to strain the pasta water into, for later use in the garden.

4. On the hottest days, I move my potted herbs into the shade.

5. I keep a dishpan in the shower to gather up gray water for the lawn.

6. I soak my veggies in a bowl, rather that run water down the drain. I can then re-use the water for plants.

7. The dehumidifier water from the basement is perfect for watering the lemon trees.

8. Always turn the water off when brushing your teeth.

9. Run a basin of water for shaving, rather then let the water run. Don’t shave your legs in the shower.

10. Break the habit of using hot water when cold will do just as well.

11. Drink tap water.

12. Give Sigg aluminum water bottles as gifts to your friends.

13. Always turn off the water when not in immediate use. Get practiced at putting the water on at half stream.

14. Check you garden hoses for leaks. This is a big one for older gardens with older equipment.

15. Install drip irrigation and save big bucks on your water bill.
